Our amazing sister, aunt, and friend, Wanda Lyn Manning, of Provo passed away peacefully on September 28, 2011, with family and friends at her side. Wandie faced a fierce opponent in pancreatic cancer and handled it valiantly and courageously for almost twenty months. Wandie will be remembered fondly for her steadfast devotion to her family, friends and faith. Her concern for others rather than herself stood out as her greatest strength.
Wandie was born on March 9, 1954, in Owyhee, Nevada, to Edwin Norris Manning and Dorothy Thomas, and is a member of the Shoshone-Paiute tribe. Wandie graduated from Mesa High School in Mesa, Arizona, and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Brigham Young University. Later on, Wandie also earned an Associates Degree from Utah Valley Community College in Paralegal Studies.
Wandie was employed for many years at Signetics where she made many life long friends. Wandie currently worked as a probation officer for the Fourth Judicial District Juvenile Court, and had been at that position for the past several years. Wandie was very devoted to this job and was blessed to be able to continue working throughout her illness. Wandie excelled at this job and will be forever remembered by colleagues as a great friend and mentor. Wandie had compassion for each of the youth she oversaw, and a genuine desire to help each of them. Wandie wanted to express her love and appreciation to each of those she worked with at the Juvenile Court.
Wandie was the first member of her family to be baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Wandie's example, devotion and faithfulness to the Church has lead to many others in her family becoming members, and she was able to leave this life knowing of this legacy. Wandie was active in numerous Church callings, including many leadership positions, and served selflessly and tirelessly in each.
Wandie understood the importance of family and never missed a family gathering, and quite often was the organizer and planner of such events. One gathering she particularly looked forward to each year was branding with her brother at his ranch in Owyhee, Nevada. Wandie also enjoyed attending Native American Pow Wows, and made outfits for many of her nieces and nephews. Wandie's hobbies included Native American beadwork, camping, crafts, and especially cooking. Wandie was also a good athlete, and an avid BYU sports fan!
Wandie is survived by her three sisters: Myrn (Virgil) Townsend, Elko, Nevada; Vickie (Jose) Navarro, Elko, Nevada; and Jill Stewart, Provo, Utah. She also has three brothers: Dickie Kingston, Owyhee, Nevada; Lou Thorpe, Owyhee, Nevada; and Dale (Donna) Shaw, Elko, Nevada. Although Wandie never had children of her own she was blessed with many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, each of whose lives she had a hand in nurturing and raising. Wandie was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents Henry and Rosie Thomas and Guy and Bessie Manning, a sister Faye McDade, and a brother Orrin James Thomas.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at the Provo South Stake Center, 835 South 500 West, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary, 85 East 300 South, Provo, Utah, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2011, and also on Tuesday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. A funeral service will also be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 7, 2011, at the Human Development Center in Owyhee, Nevada. Interment will be in the New Town Cemetery in Owyhee, Nevada.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Steve Wallentine and his staff at the oncology department of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for their kindness and gracious treatment of Wandie throughout her ordeal.
